There is 1 comment on BU Trustee Richard Cohen’s Challenge Bolsters Need-Based Undergrad Financial Aid

  1. They should raise similar challenge (s) for Merit based scholarships. The high tuition of BU scares away many a bright student from even applying here since their reasonable family incomes will disqualify them for need based. Of those with very high credentials who still apply hoping for merit awards, most will be disappointed to know they wouldn’t get any (5-6% only get something). So they have to turn down BU admissions to go elsewhere. Compare to USC’s merit based awards to more than 20% of incoming class.
Some of those who still join and perform outstandingly, will start thinking about transferring out in a year or two … If BU intends to stay competitive, it needs to look at what peers like USC and NYU are doing to get the brightest to their schools and keeping them.
